Gun Myths: Shooting At Cars
I get this question a lot in class- what kind of cover does a vehicle actually provide? The answer from my own experience is not very much. A non-tactical vehicle is just that, no armor. They don’t stop bullets, usually not even the engines. So while there’s things you can do to safeguard against flats, there’s not a lot else without substantial modifications that not just anyone aside from a Cartel can afford to do.
These two videos are pretty realistic references, even if they’re in Russian.

I found one of Paul Harrel’s videos very informative…

Shoulder launched thermobaric rocket, makes that RPG look downright anemic.
What was the puff of smoke ~half way to target? Both the RPG and the thermobaric rockets showed this.
When we shot a vehicle with various 5.56 and 7.62 rounds, the results were pretty random, with barrier penetrating, AP and ball pretty hard to differentiate their effectiveness. Engine compartment hits did result in a vehicle fire, fuel injection system was not run dry.

Trees are pretty much useless as cover, too.
Joe, the RPG’s puff of smoke on the way to the car is the primary rocket motor starting. You can tell that the RPG moves much faster after the puff.
