Bonhomme Richard is/was much more than a helicopter aircraft carrier. It had undergone a $250 million upgrade to handle F-35s, as some of the other flat/straight decks can now. The force projection is considerably higher than a helicopter-only airwing.

There are some good commercial router and VPN hardware options out there but are tricky for those without experience using them. Also, most networking hardware is an epic shit-show of security flaws even with open source firmware.
For a lot of people, keeping one device on your home networking equipment highly secure is more manageable vs messing with the networking equipment itself. I.e. a cheap used PC with Linux installed along with a VPN “kill switch.” A kill switch ensures no traffic leaves the device unless the VPN is connected. From there, you can tunnel the Tor Browser thought that connection or a VM with a second VPN.
Also with regard to your friend wanting to use a single Android device, something that can help is to spoof your MAC address or turn on MAC address randomization. While not perfect, it makes it more difficult to fingerprint your device.
