The Kinder-Morgan Incident, Stealth Drones and China’s Growing Threat on the Southern Border, an analysis by NC Scout

On 9 February 2021, an unknown drone was sighted surveiling Kinder Morgan’s fuel tanks in vicinity of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The incident, described further by online magazine The Drive, (https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/40756/new-details-emerge-on-the-highly-modified-drone-that-outran-police-helicopters-over-tucson) caused quite a bit of concern by the aerial interdiction unit of the US Customs and Border Patrol. Described as being ‘highly modified’, it outran the CBP helicopter and also was able to evade the night vision capabilities of the flight crew. This is an indication of technology far beyond that of even the CNGJ drug cartel. While details are still scarce other than what’s been reported, we cannot rule out nation state backing for the incident.
Who would posses technology on par with the exhibited capabilities? The US, Israel, Russia and China. Of those, the most logical source would be China- the Chinese Communist Party has had major influence in the region since at least the early 2000s, investing in infrastructure along the southern US border and even purchasing the largest radio & television station in Northern Mexico (https://www.americanpartisan.org/2018/08/chinese-purchase-large-mexican-radio-station-near-us-border/). So it would not be outside the realm of possibilities that the Chinese are indeed fielding their own Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) drones in the region. This would also be a perfect opportunity to experiment with their own capabilities in a relatively low threat environment, especially considering the weakness of the current US administration on border protection. Such moves could be made almost unimpeded. Were China to field their ISR drones along the southern border, what would be used?

One of the primary missions would be to conduct not just intelligence collection near our southern border airbases but exploitation in the form of electronic warfare (EW). China has purpose-built EW drones, most recently the Y-8 (https://www.defenseworld.net/news/20091/China_displays_Electronic_Warfare_Capable_Drones#.YMUDHEwpDIU) both to field to the PLA but also for export to nations such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Another potential suspect is the Chinese GJ-11, also known as the ‘Sharp Sword”, a multi-mission hypersonic stealth drone unveiled in October 2019 (https://theaviationist.com/2019/10/01/china-unveils-a-new-supersonic-spy-drone-during-massive-military-parade-in-beijing-and-heres-our-analysis/) . The aircraft itself maintains a very low profile, resembling the Lockheed D-21 and was designed with comparable capabilities, including radar scrambling skin more commonly known as ‘stealth’ technology.
Either drone would fit the scenario of the described incident, with the aircraft easily outrunning the CBP helicopter in pursuit. This is just one of the more recent of many, many incidents occurring more frequently along the US Southern border, which was documented in the original article from the Drive annotated above. It is also important to note the large number of Chinese real estate investments in the region as well which could potentially serve as a future base of operations. One of the first and most obvious requirements would be a paved runway surrounded by obscure terrain, such as what’s found in southern Texas.

As has been reported by my sources in the region, including several individuals in the Texas oil industry, one of the more interesting investments the Chinese have made is in a large ranch called MorningStar not too far north of Del Rio and Laughlin Air Force Base. Del Rio is one of the epicenters of the illegal border crossings and well known to CBP and Texas law enforcement for heavy cartel human and drug smuggling. The Chinese investments under the guise of real estate development and investment in green energy, paint a far more nefarious picture, especially concerning their larger plans for US destabilization detailed in Unrestricted Warfare (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unrestricted_Warfare).

MorningStar Ranch has a large paved airfield on site, FAA callsign TA81, which could support the launching of drones, as well as a variety of other missions. According to the FAA it is listed as being permanently closed, which is odd given its well maintained appearance. It has an adjacent and equally capable airfield just to the northwest as well. The ranch is owned by a allegedly former Chinese military official by the name of Sun Guangxin (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/texas-stops-chinese-billionaire-from-building-wind-farm/ar-AAKrkeu) most recently prevented from building a large scale wind farm.

It would be a nearly ideal location in a remote area along the US border. It must be pointed out that this is one of many areas of potential interest working as potential logistics support areas (LSAs) for future Chinese operations in the event of a war with the US. And while this reality may be dismissed by some as hyperbole, it must be recognized the severe levels of Chinese operations currently being run inside the United States. There is no such thing as a coincidence and there is no such thing as a benign purpose.

    I don’t think any sane person could read Unrestricted Warfare and think China is *not* making full use of our incredibly porous border. Last month CBP caught 170,000 people illegally crossing the border. How many more did they miss? With numbers like these, it’d be quite easy to sneak an entire infantry division into America. China makes good use of its network of expats, such as the individual mentioned above who owns the airfield. It’s well documented that the Soviets had a system of prepared hide sites/ supply dumps for it’s special forces teams operating inside the West. I highly doubt the Chinese are not doing likewise.

      Consider- wind farm turbines are very sensitive to adverse winds. Wing tip vortices from aircraft requiring 8k-10k + runway lengths, travel out, down, and away from the aircraft, for up to 5 miles, rotating at up to 130mph. Surface winds drift the vorticesEven small aircraft, like MD-80’s creat tip vortices. Look up wind turbine limitations, and aircraft restrictions flying in proximity to wind farms.

    Serious stuff. Maybe I am retarded but why is a CPB helicopter responding and not an F 22 following it to it’s origin.? If you don’t patrol it you don’t own it applies to airspace too.
    Probably fighting off the Russian threat in the Baltic or Black Sea.

      The tacair out of Luke have radars designed to only see aircraft moving above 150 kts. (Speed gates). As advanced as they are, they are designed to ignore ground traffic like trucks on the highways, trains,etc. The LE helos have flir, but flir has it’s limitations. FAA radar only tracks transponder returns, no skin paint possible. Terminal radar, the fast spinning dish on top of the tower, skin paints, but only to about 5 miles. All the military ranges use targeting pods to track, and control aircraft. So we have no threat radar at all, along the borders.

        A half dozen E -3 s could cover the whole south. They are probably busy ‘protecting’ dumbocracy elsewhere though.

          E-3’s radar is pulse doppler = equals can’t see slow movers, or ultralights, or drones. Older P-3 Customs awacs have pulse radar, to see boats. That’s the ticket. Joint stars would work as they see all emanations, but the military is being conned out of the j-stars program. We need the Aegis ashore system covering the borders, modified to see slow, and non reflective a/c. Consider a system that tracks IR, and negative UV (shadows generated by airborn tgts. The Rattler system, using DRT boxes would track emmanations, data links, and guidance system transmissions, but the communist democrats ordered the developers to quit using it.

      Thank You for asking my question, there should be at a minimum 2 F-15’s or F-16’s on Alert like we have along the Coasts as part of what used to be referred to as ADC (Air Defense Command) which exists under a different name now. Also, NORAD sees EVERYTHING, so even if the ill equipped Air Traffic Radars can’t. This stinks of IPB (Intelligence Preparation of the Battlespace) and an orchestrated pre-planned excuse for when TPTB decide to stage another “attack”. Unbelievable.

        Neither F-15’s,nor F-16’s can see light aircraft, or drones. If they set speed gates off, they can see Cessnas Commanders, Casa’s, Navaho’s. But if the tgt aircraft drops below minimum fighter gear down stay in the air speed, it’s a no go. If you drop to 100kts, and 100ft, and fly the highways, or rails, there are big discrimination problems. Certain “pods” on certain ac could track our negative UV, if we were low enough to throw a shadow. But they were all canned set ups. Fuel burn at low altitude, even at “max conserve” is outrageous. Texans, Tucanos, and A-10’s would work, but they need systems capable of seeing the appropriate tgts. And since we have no threat detecting systems capable of identifying threats, no gci is possible. No one has the budget to turn fuel into smoke on untargeted patrols, even if it is great training. NORAD doesn’t have the capability either. The old Customs C3I East and West, with their tie ins to the blimps worked SUPER well, but the communist democrats shut the system down as it was impeding their funding streams, and kept identifying the clowns in america aircraft. Oh, and recognize the USMIL aviators are totally unfamiliar with U.S. fly over country, outside designated training areas, and low altitude training routes. Back in the day, there were low altitude training routes all over the U.S. so aviators could get to know the terrain. Hell, A-6’s had coast to coast routes,never getting above 500ft. All gone! F-4’s roamed far and wide at 500ft but sheepizens were scared of 480kt fly overs, so that went away as well.

    Hoo-Yah NC Scout. Good write-up. I’m hearing that the guy who purchased this huge plot of land is a CCP General who was instrumental in designing Lao Gai (sp?) forced labor/re-education camps in one of China’s large provinces. Mainly I wanted to tell y’all that the LORD God of heaven (as a means of judgment and punishment unto a nation that turns it’s back on Him) will send foreign troops to invade. Ref: Deuteronomy ch. 28, II Kings 24:1-4 and throughout the books of the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah. It will happen here in the USA, of this I’m certain. America has crossed God’s line-of-demarkation by the shedding of innocent blood, i.e., the slaughter of millions of babies.       The wind farm has been there for a while. The ranch has had access gates since at least 2007. It is a prime cartel crossing area. There are at least 6 airstrips on the ranch now. There is no radar coverage of the ranch. The blimp over by del rio is long gone. Border Patrol routinely sees light aircraft coming, and going to the South. Perfect place to put a drone base. All the strips on the ranch align with the air base vor/ndb/tacan by del rio. On the positive side…great pig, and turkey hunting area. Anything larger than a C-130 would generate wing tip vortices that would criple the wind farm. Cartels own all the territory South of the border, below the ranch. From Roma West, it’s routine to see Chinese kids in the stop & robs, still wearing their boot camp t-shirts. They are in the U.S., speak fluent Spanish, but little, if any English. Just sayin’ the situation needs to be looked at hard. All appropriate politicians are fully informed..crickets chirping…wind through the pines…
