Axios tries to erase ‘border czar’ from Kamala’s resume, but it used title for her

As Vice President Kamala Harris emerges as the likely Democratic nominee, left-wing media outlets such as Axios are rushing to erase the title of “border czar” from her resume, despite their own use of the title.

A Wednesday Axios article attempted to claim that Harris “never actually had” the title of “border czar” and that the moniker had gained traction with her conservative detractors. Instead, the outlet emphasized Harris had been appointed to handle the administration’s coordination with Latin American nations on the issue.

But the outlet regularly used the title of “border czar” to refer to Harris, even in the context of her work with Mexico and Guatemala.

“Harris, appointed by Biden as border czar, said she would be looking at the ‘root causes’ that drive migration,” the outlet wrote in 2021, for example.

The vice president received her immigration role in early 2021, but did not visit the southern border until June, traveling to El Paso, Texas. After the appointment, her then-spokeswoman Symone Sanders insisted Harris was “not doing the border” and that she would instead “take on the diplomatic effort, with Mexico and countries in the northern triangle to address the root causes of migration.”

But Republicans have referred to Harris as the “border czar” for years with little pushback, including during a 2023 trip of their own to the southern border.

“Kamala Harris has done nothing to ‘address the root cause of migration’ or stop the influx of illegal immigrants coming across our border daily,” Texas GOP Rep. Ronny Jackson said in March of that year. “She has completely betrayed the American people by blatantly disregarding her duties as Border Czar. Enough is enough!”
