Costco expands ‘doomsday’ lineup with new product after gold bar demand exploded with customers spending $200m a month

DOOMSDAY preppers can expect to rush to Costco as the store has revealed a new product joining the chain’s lineup of precious metals.

The wholesale retailer is now selling bars of platinum after their 1-ounce gold bars sold out in a few hours when they first went on sale last year.

Following the success of the gold bars and silver coins, 1-ounce platinum bars are now available on Costco’s online website.

Described as 999.5 platinum, the bars cost a whopping $1,089.99 each.

So far, the bar is only sold online. Delivery is currently unavailable in multiple US locations including Louisiana and Nevada.

The roll-out of the precious metals has been a hit with Costco shoppers since the store first had trouble keeping the beloved gold bars on the shelves.

The retailer started selling silver coins after gold bar sales topped a $100 million profit in the first fiscal quarter.

Wells Fargo estimated in April that Costco sold up to $200 million per month in precious metals.

Precious metals might be extra popular as doomsday preppers are stocking up on the assets, according to CNBC.

The goods are thought to be valuable as they could be used for bartering in a post-apocalyptic world.

Doomsday worries grow with every tech outage and natural disaster – not to mention concerns about the upcoming presidential election.

GOLD RUSH

Jonathan Rose, the CEO of Genesis Gold Group, told The U.S. Sun earlier this year that even millionaires and elites were hoarding gold to prepare for the end of days.

“I think these people are realizing that, hey we don’t have a crystal ball per se, but we have a good road map and they are looking at the problems the economy is having right now,” Rose said.

“Whether they’re looking at dollar devaluation or these things called brick nations, which are countries banding together to create their own currency backed by gold.

“And with the dollar losing its value, there’s just the general economic concern of combating inflation and that’s why many people will move to a safe haven,” he explained.

Rose told The U.S. Sun that gold bars, like the ones sold at Costco, could be broken like “candy bars” to be bartered with in the future.

“On terms of prepping, preppers do want gold, and preppers want small denomination gold coins and small denomination silver coins – something tradable and something barterable,” Rose said.

“So we’ve seen a spike in small denomination coins which are considered more bartable/tradable and there has been a massive uptick in that, like absolute surge in that type of metal.”

DOOMSDAY PREP

Costco previously made headlines in connection to products focused on the end of the world when shoppers noticed doomsday meal prep kits on the shelves.

The meal buckets, which cost under $100 and are set to last 25 years, come with 150 servings of easy-to-prepare meals that just need water to make.

The retailer also sells a $6,000 prep kit with 600 cans of food.

The U.S. Sun has reached out to Costco for comment.
