Joe Biden Calls Trump Voters ‘Garbage’ in Zoom Call With Latino Voters
Joe Biden insulted at least half of the voters in the United States during in a campaign call with Latino voters Tuesday evening, effectively calling all of Trump’s supporters “garbage” humans.
Biden, like the Harris Campaign, was seizing on insult comic Tony Hinchcliffe’s joke about Puerto Rico being a “floating island of garbage” during his routine at former President Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
“Donald Trump has no character. He doesn’t give a damn about the Latino community,” Biden reportedly said in a Zoom call with the organization Voto Latino. “Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage.”
He added: “In Puerto Rico where I’m fr—in my home state of Delaware, they’re good, decent, honorable people. The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.”
Biden added, “his demonization of [ unclear] is unconscionable and it’s unamerican.”
Biden, who has largely disappeared from public view in recent weeks, took part in the Zoom call to urge Latino voters to cast their ballots early.
During Trump’s rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Tuesday night, Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) alerted Trump and his thousands of supporters that Biden had just called them “garbage.”
“Just moments ago, Joe Biden stated that our supporters are garbage,” Rubio told the stunned crowd, as Trump shook his head sadly. “He’s talking about the Border Patrol, he’s talking about nurses, he’s talking about teachers … he’s talking about everyday Americans who love their country and want to dream big again, and support you, Mr. President.”
“And I hope their campaign is about to apologize for what Joe Biden just said. We are not garbage. We are patriots who love America, and thank you for running, Mr. President,” Rubio added.
Performing mop-up for Biden, a White House spokesperson claimed he was talking about Hinchcliffe, the comedian who made the joke. The “Kill Tony” host is known for his edgy and insulting brand of humor.
Puerto Rican Trump supporters who were interviewed after the MSG rally, however, were unfazed.
They didn’t necessarily love the joke, but they appreciated the comedian’s right to “push the envelope.”
“We like jokes… And we understand the importance of a comedian having the freedom to push the envelope because that’s always been what has separated them from everyday folks,” said a young Puerto Rican woman after the rally.
Trump, himself, distanced himself from Hinchcliffe after his jibe drew a widespread, bipartisan backlash.
Update:
Tuesday night, the White House staffer who runs Biden’s X account denied that he was referring to Trump’s supporters when he said “the only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” and was referring to Hinchcliffe.
“Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” the post reads. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
The explanation makes little sense in light of Biden’s full remarks.
Biden clearly said “supporters,” not “supporter.” And it’s not clear what he was referring to when he accused the comic of demonizing Latinos.
Hinchcliffe made the one off-color joke about Puerto Rico, indicated he was against the open border and said Latinos love making babies. One could argue the jokes were in poor taste, but it’s a stretch to say he was demonizing anyone.
The Trump Campaign also released a statement Tuesday night:
“President Trump is backed by Latinos, Black voters, union workers, angel moms, law enforcement officers, border patrol agents, and Americans of all faiths — and Harris, Walz, and Biden have labeled these great Americans as fascists, Nazis, and now, garbage,” said Karoline Leavitt, Trump Campaign National Press Secretary. “There’s no way to spin it: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris don’t just hate President Trump, they despise the tens of millions of Americans who support him. Kamala does not deserve four more years. President Trump will be a president for ALL Americans.”
