In a series of unprecedented security preparations, the U.S. Capitol Police executed a “Casualty Evacuation Exercise” Monday night, raising questions from prominent personalities such as Marjorie Taylor Greene about heightened security measures as the 2024 election approaches.

The U.S. Capitol Police issued a public notice to allay potential concerns, stating, “EXERCISE: This evening, the United States Capitol Police & our federal partners are conducting a routine training exercise on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. Please do not be alarmed if you see emergency vehicles and low flying helicopters.”

The exercise, which featured low-flying helicopters and emergency vehicles around the Capitol grounds, comes amid escalating discussions about potential security concerns surrounding the upcoming election certification process.

This drill follows a campus-wide evacuation exercise conducted just one week prior, which temporarily closed major thoroughfares including Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue and D Street, NE.

The timing and nature of these security preparations have drawn attention from various political figures, including Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who expressed concerns about the increased security measures in Washington.

Greene suggested these preparations might be connected to the January 6th certification process for the presidential election.

Recent developments include the Department of Defense’s authorization for military assistance to law enforcement, and the Department of Homeland Security’s designation of January 6th as a “Special Security Event.”

Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has also submitted requests for enhanced security measures during the certification period.

Plans reportedly include the installation of security fencing around the Capitol complex from January 5-21st, per Greene.

The security preparations come at a time when numerous House races remain highly competitive, with approximately 20 seats described as too close to call.

Greene voiced specific concerns about the potential impact of House control on the certification process, stating that if Democrats maintain or gain control, they “will build a fortress of resistance in the House.”

“They will stop everything, they will impeach Trump again, and they will abuse every ounce of power that comes with the House of Representatives,” Greene added. “And Democrats see all of us as the enemy.”
