Kristi Noem Drops Biggest FEMA Announcement in History
High-ranking government officials are actively exploring the potential elimination of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), signaling a potential major overhaul of disaster response mechanisms in the United States.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced during a recent Cabinet meeting her intention to “eliminate FEMA,” marking a significant moment in the agency’s history.
Noem’s declaration comes amid growing criticism of the agency’s structure and effectiveness.
The potential dismantling of FEMA has gained traction from multiple political corners. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) characterized the agency as “overly bureaucratic” and “overly politicized,” while Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL)has proposed transforming FEMA into an independent Cabinet-level agency.
Moskowitz specifically criticized FEMA’s current placement within the Department of Homeland Security, arguing that the agency is hindered by bureaucratic complexity, according to a report from Government Executive.
“DHS has become too big and too slow to oversee what needs to be a quick and flexible emergency response,” he stated.
President Donald Trump and his allies have consistently suggested that states should exercise more direct control over disaster relief efforts, challenging the federal government’s current centralized approach.
